Quick and easy ice breakerIce Breakers are great for getting groups of people who barely know each to open up and share a bit about themselves. Here's a really easy one that's quick to set-up:

You will need 2 ropes or tape or something to make 2 parallel lines on the floor. The gap between the lines should be wide enough to have all the group stand inside the middle section of the 2 lines.

Make a list of pairs for example:

  • beach or mountain
  • active or relaxed
  • wine or beer
  • meat or vegetables
  • rock or pop
  • hot or cold
  • travel or stay at home
  • gold or silver
  • smart or casual
  • coffee or tea
  • quiet or lively
Call out one of the pairs, say silver, and point to the right of the rope and then say gold pointing to the left of the rope. Everyone makes their choice and steps into the silver or the gold area. Everyone takes a look at everyone's choices. You can swiftly move onto the next pair after you have got everyone back into the middle again. Or you can randomly ask someone why they made their choice.
This game is all about the choices we make everyday; consciously and sub-consciously. You can make the pairs of words more meaningful by linking them to the topic of the day. This is a  great lead-in.

The Ripple Effect Ice Breaker

Here's a great fun ice breaker suitable for teenagers or youth groups. It's high energy and therefore suitable as a warm-up or wake-up exercise.

Get everyone to sit in a circle with one person standing in the middle. On command you will say to the group "move to the left" or "move to the right". Everyone will move seats in unison and the job of the person in the middle is to get a seat. When they finally get a seat, the ousted person goes in the middle and they then repeat the process to try and get a seat.

It can be quite rowdy so careful adjudiaction is needed!

Back to school Ice Breakers

Our kids have just gone back to school today. In some ways it's great but in other ways I love the lack of structure during the holidays. I wonder how they are getting on? New teachers, new school mates? I wonder if they will have an inspiring Induction Week  like some of the schools who are customers of our team building company?

Many schools hire us to go in and run a team building day or ice breaker sessions during their back to school induction weeks. I think these schools are very lucky that their teachers take the beginning of the school year seriously enough to want to set the right tone for the school year ahead.

More Induction Week Ice Breakers

Running a great ice breaker session at the start of Induction Week can help pupils settle in quickly and look forward to the school year ahead with purpose and commitment. It's also great to see teachers as well as students in a relaxed and fun-filled mood. Having fun together creates a great atmosphere and helps to prepare pupils for the tasks ahead.

We always start an ice breaker session with everyone sitting or standing  in a circle. Generally we don't use tables for most of our events and you might need to move the tables aside -it creates a more inclusive and relaxed atmosphere.

A Quick Ice Breaker:

Introduce yourself and say one thing you like and one thing you dislike. Then ago around the circle and ask everyone in turn to offer their likes and dislikes. You will learn quite a bit about your pupils from this simple ice breaker.

Next move on to something a bit more challenging. Tell them what your goals are for the school year (briefly - no more than 1 minute!) and then ask them to think about what they might like to achieve within the school year. Ask them to write it down and then go around and ask for contributions. You may have to tease it out of them as they may well have not really thought about this before. You might want to keep these goals and put them to together perhaps on display in the classroom. You might also want to re-vist these goals regularly to see if you and your students are on track to achieving them. Students should be able to change goals or set new goals and help each other with their goals.

Imagine what a great celebration it would be to see all your students achieve their goals at the end of the school year. You could create your own mini class achievement ceremony.

Back to school ice breakersThe summer holidays are drawing to a close and soon thoughts of returning to school will be foremost in our minds.

Most children look forward to going back to school to see friends - like my daughter - but unfortunately there are also some who dread the thought - like my son.

If you are a teacher why not ease your pupils back into the new term with a session of ice breaker games? Ice breakers help new pupils integrate into the class and quickly get to know other pupils. They help them bond with others in a way that would take a long time otherwise.

For pupils who are not so keen to return to school, ice breakers will inject a sense of fun into the curriculum and help them re-connect with friends and others that they have not seen for weeks.

Above all, as a teacher, you want your pupils to integrate quickly and easily so you can get on with the job of teaching, motivating and inspiring them for the coming term. Youth group ice breakers work like magic and will help you have fun with your pupils and really engage with them, so the job of getting them to concentrate and look forward to the rest of the term will be  a lot easier.

Many of the schools we work with have Induction Weeks at the start of the new school year and give alot of time over to helping pupils settle in - I can think of no better way for Ice breaker games to be utilised than in this setting.

Spacehopper GymkhanaLast night we spent a great evening at the local pony club camp where our daughter is in attendance!

The final night BBQ was looking a bit flat without any kind of entertainment or breaking the ice  activities for kids and parents so we offered to bring some of our old fashioned pub type games and a few not so old games - like Spacehoppers!

What fun! The kids went mad for Splat the Rat, Ring the Bull and Giant Jenga - but being an ingenious games master, Phil had the kids playing all sorts of games with the Giant Jenga - at one point there was a giant track of jenga peices around the field with 20 kids carefully balanced on the bricks trying not to fall off. Every time they fell off they went to the back of the queue! Phil kept adding more and more bricks to make the track longer, even up and over jumps!

But the biggest laugh of all was reserved for the Spacehopper Gymkhana - a bending race with 4 spacehoppers and plenty of screaming kids. Well not just kids but parents too!

Just goes to show with a bit of imagination how you can use your ice breaker games in lots of different ways and make sure your parties are always as much fun as they can be!
